Turnip Greens Qualify as a Superfood

While searching for crops that can make a difference we came upon a writeup that sung the praises of turnip greens. An entry on the Worlds Healthiest Foods website pointed out that turnip greens were outstanding additions to our diets.

In fact,
"For total glucosinolate content, turnip greens outscore cabbage, kale, cauliflower, and broccoli among the most commonly eaten cruciferous vegetables. That fantastic glucosinolate content brings with it some equally fantastic health benefits. The glucosinolates in turnip greens are phytonutrients that can be converted into isothiocyanates (ITCs) with cancer-preventing properties. All cruciferous vegetables have long been known to contain glucosinolates, but it has taken recent research to show us exactly how valuable turnip greens are in this regard."

We have tried growing these with our hydroponic and soil systems and the pictures speak for themselves. These greens germinated and grew quickly and profusely. Photos were taken at 7 days of growth and appear to be more than ready to harvest. The microgreens have a delicate flavor at this point not nearly as sharp as the full grown plants.

In the next two weeks we will debut our line of growing kits highlighting all of the plants featured in our blog entries. Kits will have consumer sizes along with starter commercial units available. Watch for our coming announcements.

Fighting Effects of Air Pollution with Food

Much has been made of the health effects of broccoli. The super food label was bestowed on broccoli because of the amazing amount of benefits of eating broccoli. Early researchers from Johns Hopkins University successfully patented broccoli sprouts as anti cancer food until the patent was overturned. The findings were never in question, just the ability to protect and monetize the plants.

Recent research as shown that elements in broccoli sprouts can also help flush air borne toxins out of your system. The research done in heavily polluted areas of China showed the excretion of pollutants in urine samples. Researchers used a drink made with freeze dried broccoli sprout extract.

The simple addition of these wonder foods can only enhance the potential benefits from our push to include fresh and live foods in your diet. We will introduce a line of particularly potent home grow kits for the holidays featuring several crops we have identified to be particularly outstanding. Watch for the introduction of them in the next few weeks.
